Taiyuan, capital city of Shanxi province, saw 6.6 percent growth in gross domestic product (GDP) in 2019, with GDP amounting to 402.85 billion yuan ($56.81 billion), according to the Taiyuan statistics bureau. 

The tertiary industry is playing a leading role in driving economic growth in Taiyuan, with 7.1 percent growth in added value in 2019 against last year and its contribution to GDP growth amounting to 65.57 percent, followed by 34.06 percent by the secondary industry and 0.37 percent by the primary industry. 

The city's general public budget revenue in 2019 was 38.66 billion yuan, an increase of 3.6 percent year on year and the general public budget expenditure was 61.06 billion yuan, up 12.6 percent. Tax revenue hit 30.18 billion yuan, an increase of 1.6 percent.

Annual investment in fixed assets rose 10.2 percent last year and retail sales of consumer goods totaled 195.28 billion yuan, up 7.8 percent.

Agriculture

The city's grain crop planting area amounted to 617.9 square kilometers in 2019, with grain output reaching 244,900 metric tons, a decrease of 16.2 percent year on year and the total output of chicken, pork, beef and mutton was 39,300 tons, down 13.4 percent year on year. 

Industries

The added value of all industrial companies above a designated size – those with annual sales revenue of 20 million yuan or more – increased 4.5 percent compared with that of 2018. Meanwhile, the added value of the coal industry increased by 2.4 percent and that of the non-coal industries increased by 4.9 percent, respectively.

The equipment manufacturing industry grew rapidly, with its added value increasing 8.6 percent and the sector contributing 55.7 percent to the added value growth of all industrial companies above a designated size. 

The added value of strategic emerging industries accounted for 15.5 percent of the added value of all industrial companies above a designated size in the city, an increase of 4.1 percent year on year. 

Tourism also maintained rapid growth, with total tourism revenue reaching 117.18 billion yuan, up 17.7 percent year on year. Last year, Taiyuan received 258,000 foreign tourists, an increase of 5.0 percent and 96.27 million domestic tourists, an increase of 18.9 percent.  

Foreign trade

The value of Taiyuan's foreign trade in 2019 was 111.96 billion yuan, an increase of 3.1 percent year on year. Imports made up 46.78 billion yuan of the total, up 10.6 percent, while exports totaled 65.17 billion yuan, down 1.7 percent.
