The recent TV series Three-Body and the movie The Wandering Earth II – both adapted from hit novels by China's first Hugo Award winner Liu Cixin – set off a sci-fi craze across China.

Liu worked as a computer engineer at the Niangziguan Power Plant in Pingding county, Yangquan in North China's Shanxi province, when he wrote the two best-selling novels.

In 2009, the Niangziguan Power Plant was shut down, but Liu has left his mark there in the form of a 1,400-square-meter mural depicting impressive scenes from his novels.

During the Spring Festival holiday from Jan 21 to 27, many sci-fi fans came to the plant for the mural.

Local authorities plan to develop a sci-fi film and television base and tourist attraction at the former power plant with Liu as the celebrity influence.
