No 1 Middle School of Yu county was built in 1926 and was approved as the model regular high school of Shanxi province in 2009.

Located at Jinlong East Street of Yu county in Yangquan city, the school covers a total area of 24 hectares and a building area of 135,000 square meters. It was built based on the terrain condition with office building, teaching building and laboratory building. It can also be divided into three functional areas, including teaching area, living area and sports area, making it a modern school integrated with teaching, research, sport, living and foreign exchange.

Before 2018, No 1 Middle School of Yu County only had senior high school department, but due to having large numbers of students, the school established junior high school department. The school now has 83 classes including 73 high school classes and 10 junior high school classes, 370 teaching staff and 4,372 students.

The school has won good reputation for its teaching quality, known as "cradle of talent", which has gotten a number of honorable titles including the National advanced research units and the Shanxi civilized school.
