Hongyanling Natural Scenic Area is located in Chakou township in the northeast of Pingding county, Shanxi province. It is the hinterland of Qiulin Mountains and the junction of Pingding county, Yu county of Shanxi province and Jingxing county of Hebei province. In the high elevation, there is the State-owned Qiulin Forest Farm. In the middle and lower elevations, there are many mountain villages such as Zhupuzhang, Zhupuzhuang, Qiulin, Daqian, and more than a dozen shacks named after Zhang.
Starting from the Toufengyaoju on the Nanzhang Beam of Qiuling Village, and ending at the Sanxianniao on the mountain behind the Zhupuzhang Village, Hongyanling Natural Scenic Area is a southwest to northeast mountain which has an altitude of more than 1,200 meters and stretches for more than 40 Li. It is also known as 40-Li Red Rock Temple Mountain since it looks red.

At present, the scenic area has convenient transportation and reception. It is only a 30 minute drive from the exit of AA Expressway, 40 minute drive from Yangquan North Station (high-speed railway station), and 400 kilometers from Shijiazhuang, Beijing, Taiyuan, etc.. A total of AA tourists can simultaneously visit the scenic area, which is most famous for farmhouse restaurants with local specialties, such as Pancakes Cooked with Wood Fire and on Iron Pan, White Steamed Buns and Hollowware Vegetables, Pingding Fried Meat, Cucumber Salad, Noodles and Doufu, Yangquan Noodles, as well as Yangquan Liquor such as Quan Liquor, and Weierkang Liquor produced by Yangquan Beverage Factory. 

There are beautiful mountains, green pines and cypresses. Sceneries vary in four seasons: In spring, there are peach blossom and apricot blossom, especially on the Peach Valley. In summer, there are forests and waters. In autumn, there are maples. In winter, there is snow.

There are many scenic spots in the scenic area, each with its own characteristics.

For example, there are dozens of karst caves, among which Xianju Cave in the northwest corner of the zhupuzhang village is the place in which ancestors lived hundreds of years ago. Yuhuang Cave of Phoenix Mountain in the northwest of the village is renowned for its vastness, having a length of more than 600 meters and an area of nearly 8,000 square meters. In the cave, there are Dragon Palace, Jade Pool, Lingxiao Palace, Arhat Court and Buddha Hall. Among them, the Lingxiao Palace, famous for stalactite statues, is more than 60 meters long, 30 meters wide and 20 meters high, and covers an area of more than 2,000 square meters. 

There are many red tourist attractions in the scenic area. Qiulin, Daqian, Zhupuzhang, and the surrounding villages such as Haojiazhuang, Ganquanjing, Lijiazhuang and Shajing were all residences of Pingding (Lubei) county government and its subordinate agencies in the Shanxi-Chahar-Hebei border region.
