The sixth session of the 14th Taiyuan Municipal People's Congress opened on Feb 23 in Taiyuan city, the capital of Shanxi province, with 305 deputies attending the first plenary congress.

During the gathering, Zhang Xinwei, the acting mayor of Taiyuan, delivered a report on the municipal government's work and achievements made over the past five years. 

Zhang said that in the past five years, the comprehensive strength of Taiyuan has steadily improved, and authorities furthered reform and opening-up in an all-around way. Achievements were also made in optimizing industrial structure, alleviating poverty, constructing urban infrastructure and enhancing people's happiness. 

New targets for the city's development in 2021 were announced at the congress, covering 10 significant categories, including epidemic prevention and control, innovation, rural revitalization, development of the modern industrial system, environmental protection, green production and lifestyle promotion, and people's livelihoods.

There are several agenda items for attendees at the three-day session, including listening to and reviewing the work report of Taiyuan's municipal government, reviewing the city's 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-25) for socioeconomic development and discussing the city's long-term objectives through 2035.  

Deputies have also been examining the report on the implementation of the 2020 national economic and social development plan by Taiyuan's government, as well as the city's 2021 economic and social development draft plan.

The city's overall budget revenue in 2020 and the draft budget for 2021 will also be reviewed during the session, which runs until Feb 25.
