Taiyuan city, capital of North China's Shanxi province, installed and put 3,944 5G base stations into use and had 260,000 5G terminal users in the first half of 2020, completing this year's target for 5G infrastructure construction in advance, according to Taiyuan industry and information technology bureau.

While advancing the construction of 5G infrastructure, Taiyuan also further accelerated 5G technological applications in its smart city development and in various industries, as well as the construction of 5G innovation platforms.

The Taiyuan health commission reached an initial cooperation agreement in the first half with the Taiyuan branch of China Unicom, one of three major Chinese telecos, on 5G-based emergency rescues and telemedicine. The Shanxi Eye Hospital in the city signed a strategic partnership agreement with Taiyuan branch of China Telecom to build a 5G-based telemedicine platform.

In the field of 5G-based smart culture and tourism, Shanxi Museum and the Taiyuan branch of China Telecom together completed 5G network coverage and robot on-site inspection planning in the museum during the period.

Meanwhile, the Taiyuan branch of China Mobile -- along with tourist attractions in the city -- has been promoting 5G-based drone and virtual reality livestreaming services to visitors.

The city has also carried out 5G-based industrial internet applications trials in the equipment manufacturing, metallurgy and electronic information industries -- while paving the way for local telecoms and manufacturers to construct 5G digital smart factories.

Officials said the Shanxi Transformation and Comprehensive Reform Demonstration Zone has been developing a 5G smart city demonstration project, with the help of the Taiyuan branch of China Mobile.

In addition, the city has been advancing its development of 5G innovation platforms with the establishment of a 5G Industry Technology Alliance, as well as the construction of a 5G Industry Research Institute and a 5G Joint Laboratory.

Officials said that in the second half of the year, Taiyuan will expand its 5G network distribution and micro-site layout to achieve full coverage of 5G in the urban areas of the city.
