Taiyuan city, capital of North China's Shanxi province, will focus on the development of stainless steel deep-processing industrial clusters, to build a world-class stainless steel industrial base, according to the province's 2020 plan on the transformation and upgrading of the industry.

Local officials said the plan clarified that all cities in Shanxi will enhance the technological innovation capabilities of their companies and promote the high-end, green and intelligent development of the steel industry by focusing on intelligent manufacturing.

Relying on the expertise of local steel manufacturer Taiyuan Iron and Steel Group Co (TISCO), the city will aim at developing 40 strategic varieties of stainless steel products in which China has not yet made a breakthrough.

Officials said this will help solve a bottleneck in the development of domestic stainless-steel materials.

Additionally, the city will develop downstream industries including producing mobile phone flexible screens, automobile exhaust pipes, ballpoint pens, high-speed rail wheelsets, robots and aerial drones.

Officials said Taiyuan will also advance the development of key projects in the steel industry.

It will upgrade enterprise production equipment, promote intelligent production and help advance the integration of the upstream and downstream stainless-steel industries which is currently being carried out by TISCO.
