Shanxi's largest independent energy storage project connected to grid

Updated: 2024-01-04

The Yangquan High-tech Industrial Development Zone's energy storage power station has recently been connected to the grid, making it the largest independent energy storage power station in operation in North China's Shanxi province.

With the continuous growth of new energy installations and the promotion of ultra-high voltage transmission, the fluctuation of Shanxi's power grid has increased year by year, affecting electricity quality for users. To achieve a continuous and stable power supply, strong energy storage technology is needed as support, thus the energy storage project in Yangquan was developed.

The project, covering an area of 3 hectares, has a capacity of 200 megawatts/400 megawatt-hours and uses lithium iron phosphate batteries.

According to Li Chunyu, the project production manager, the independent energy storage power station is like a giant power bank. It takes 2-4 hours to charge and stores 400 megawatt-hours of electricity each time, which can meet the daily electricity demand of more than 80,000 households.

"Although it is called a power station, it does not generate electricity and is just a 'porter' for electrical energy," said Li.

During periods of low electricity demand, the station is connected to an adapter socket and charged through a 220 kV transmission line. During peak electricity demand, the station discharges electricity back into the grid.

It can effectively alleviate the pressure on power supply during peak periods and serve as an emergency backup power source when electricity is limited, ensuring a stable electricity supply for users. At the same time, the integration of the energy storage power station can effectively reduce the waste of renewable energy and promote the consumption of renewable energy in the surrounding areas.

Currently, the energy storage power station is undergoing continuous facility and equipment debugging work, with plans to officially start operation in February 2024.

In the future, this station will play a role in promoting energy green transformation, and it will provide strong support to ensure the stable operation of Shanxi's power grid.
