Shanxi leaps from traditional industries to emerging sectors
Updated: 2026-01-14
Shanxi province, once dominated by coal, is undergoing a profound industrial transformation toward high-end, intelligent, and green development, marking a significant shift from reliance on traditional industries to breakthroughs in emerging sectors.
The province has advanced industrial transformation through digital and intelligent technologies and, by embracing green development, has established 133 national-level green factories, eight national-level green industrial parks, and six national-level green supply chain enterprises.
Shanxi is developing an integrated "steel-coke-chemical-hydrogen" industrial chain within the coal and coke sector; a circular economy model that breaks industry barriers, reduces overall energy consumption and emissions, and generates new industrial segments and economic drivers.
The province is also positioning itself in emerging and future industries by promoting the clustered development of computing infrastructure, with the number of standard server racks in completed and under-construction data centers exceeding 514,000, and the share of advanced computing power steadily increasing.
The agglomeration effect of emerging industries is becoming increasingly prominent, with clusters in synthetic biology, photovoltaics, high-end equipment manufacturing, new materials, and energy conservation and environmental protection accelerating growth and becoming new engines of economic expansion.
Shanxi aims to establish itself as a region with a stronger industrial foundation, optimized industrial structure, and renewed industrial momentum, charting a new chapter in the economic transformation of resource-based areas.
