Newly adapted Puzhou Opera premieres in Taiyuan

From Feb 17 to 18, the newly adapted Puzhou Opera Jingwei Fills the Sea was showcased in Taiyuan, North China's Shanxi province, as the provincial outstanding production for the 2025 festive performance.

Puzhou Opera, recognized as a national intangible cultural heritage, boasts a rich historical background, exquisite performance skills, and a unique artistic charm. Jingwei Fills the Sea portrays Jingwei's courage, resilience, and unwavering determination to eliminate sea calamities for the people.

Lin Weilin, the chief director of Jingwei Fills the Sea, said the creative team incorporated modern artistic techniques and aesthetic concepts while utilizing modern technology to explore new dimensions in set design, lighting, costumes, sound effects, and props, all tailored to the production's mythical essence.

On stage, national first-class actress Liang Jing, who starred as Jingwei, showcased a high level of exquisite martial arts skills, such as fire-breathing, wielding dual whips, and small combat knife performance. Her unique singing style, melodies, and precise rhythms conveyed the emotions and personalities of the character.

"With my perseverance and passion, I will inject new vitality into Puzhou Opera and contribute my efforts to the inheritance and development of this traditional Chinese culture," said Liang.

Audiences expressed that the opera's cultural inheritance and innovation are demonstrated through its modern interpretation of traditional myths and combination of traditional cultural elements with modern technology, offering a fresh cultural experience.
