In recent years, the civil aviation industry in North China's Shanxi province has been developing rapidly, bolstering Shanxi's efforts to further open up and expanding its relationships with countries involved in the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).

In 2023, the airports in Datong and Yuncheng successfully passed national inspection, along with the airports in Taiyuan, shaping a new model of port development within the province characterized by a greater level of interconnectedness.

At the same time, Shanxi Aviation Industry Group is fully utilizing the airports in Taiyuan to break into the aviation logistics market, enhance international air cargo transportation capabilities, and optimize the overall layout of Shanxi's aviation logistics industry.

In 2024, Taiyuan Wusu International Airport opened a passenger route from Taiyuan to Moscow, becoming an important aerial channel for the province to strengthen economic and trade exchanges, as well as bolster cultural and tourism interactions with Russia.

The airport also cemented its market advantage in Southeast Asia with routes from Taiyuan to Phuket, Bangkok, and Nha Trang. It also resumed its Singapore route and continued to restore the Taiyuan to Cheongju and Seoul routes.

Taiyuan Wusu International Airport also recently launched the first all-cargo flight from Taiyuan to Almaty, a key city in the countries involved in the BRI, facilitating smoother foreign logistics channels for the province and expanding international business cooperation.

On Dec 17, 2024, Taiyuan and Datong joined China's "transit visa-free for 240 hours" scheme. "Shanxi is becoming more open. This policy is really great. It will make travel more convenient in the future, and it will be easier for foreign friends to visit Shanxi," exclaimed an online user.
