Shanxi sees boom in tourism during Spring Festival holiday

During the 2025 Spring Festival holiday, North China's Shanxi province welcomed a total of 28.38 million domestic visits, marking a 22.2-percent increase compared to the previous year. Total tourism expenditure reached 31.74 billion yuan ($4.36 billion), reflecting a 30.03-percent year-on-year growth.

Across the province's 66 key monitored scenic spots, a total of 7.88 million visits were received, showing a 16.46-percent increase year-on-year. Cumulative ticket revenue amounted to 192 million yuan, up by 7.73 percent compared to the previous year.

Based on their unique characteristics, various tourist attractions across the province introduced a series of innovative and distinctive activities, exuding the rich "Shanxi New Year Flavor" that attracted visitors from all corners of the country.

During the holiday, Xinzhou Ancient City held various distinctive folk performances, attracting numerous visitors. According to statistics, the daily average visitor flow in Xinzhou Ancient City exceeded 100,000 during the period.

To celebrate the successful inscription of Chinese New Year on UNESCO's list, Guoyu Ancient City created the "Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) Experience Hall" on Jingyang Street, where visitors not only had the chance to appreciate the exquisite skills of ICH artisans but also participate in activities such as making Year of the Snake decorations themselves.

In addition, ice and snow-themed activities proved popular among tourists. During the holiday, visitor numbers at Taiyuan Jiurun Ski Resort and Xiling Ski Resort were two to three times higher than usual, with an average of over 1,000 visitors received daily.

Data from LY.com travel platform shows that during the Spring Festival holiday, hotel bookings in Shanxi increased by nearly 40 percent compared to the previous year, with Xinzhou and Datong entering the top 10 in the national hotel booking growth rankings.
