Geothermal energy: A new member of Shanxi's energy system
Updated: 2024-09-09
As a clean energy source, geothermal energy is crucial for driving the energy revolution. Geothermal energy has become an integral part of North China's Shanxi province's new energy system.
Shanxi is rich in shallow geothermal energy resources. It has an estimated annual exploitable amount equivalent to 128 million metric tons of standard coal, accounting for 18.28 percent of the national total. This resource could provide cooling for 1.23 billion square meters and heating for 667 million sq m.
Since the initiation of 13th Five-Year Plan (2016-20), Shanxi's geothermal energy industry has rapidly developed due to market demand. The development and utilization of geothermal resources in Shanxi have trended towards diversification with the emergence of specialized geothermal heating enterprises.
However, the number of professional enterprises in this field remains relatively low. Significant cultivation and support should be provided to establish a diversified market structure and ensure the high-quality development of the geothermal energy industry.
According to the "Shanxi Geothermal Resource Exploration and Development Plan (2021-2025)", the province aims to establish three major geothermal exploration and development bases in northern Shanxi (Datong and Xinzhou), central Shanxi (Taiyuan and Jinzhong), and southern Shanxi (Linfen and Yuncheng). This will enhance the exploration, evaluation, and utilization of geothermal resources across the province.
By 2035, these three bases are expected to yield significant results, substantially increasing the proportion of geothermal resources in the new energy sector and significantly transforming Shanxi from a traditional energy province to a new comprehensive energy province.
