Since the initiation of the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-25), North China's Shanxi province has been striving to accelerate the development of a high-end, intelligent, and green manufacturing industry, and has already achieved strong results in energy conservation and carbon reduction in the industry.

According to statistics, since the initiation of the 14th Five-Year Plan, the energy consumption of industrial units above designated size in the province has cumulatively decreased by 19 percent, the second largest decrease of any province in the country.

Specifically, Shanxi has improved the energy efficiency and environmental-friendliness of its traditional major industries such as steel and coking by upgrading the technology and equipment and increasing the proportion of advanced production capacity.

Meanwhile, focusing on high energy consuming industries such as steel, non-ferrous metals, coking, chemical, and building materials, Shanxi has promoted the use of advanced energy-saving technologies and equipment, while also stepping up work on projects related to the transformation of energy-saving and carbon reduction technology. These projects focus on generating power through waste heat and pressure, distributing photovoltaic power generation, and upgrading energy equipment.

In addition, professional energy-saving diagnostic service institutions have been employed to conduct energy-saving diagnosis for manufacturing enterprises in the province and propose practical energy-saving measure. During the14th Five-Year Plan period, such diagnoses have been carried out for more than 300 enterprises in total.

Moving forward, the province will continue to make efforts to improve the level of energy conservation and carbon reduction in the manufacturing industry by carrying out research and demonstration applications of technologies such as carbon dioxide capture, utilization and storage as well as carbon dioxide bio-conversion and utilization.
