In November 2022, North China's Shanxi province released an implementation plan for the development of the new energy storage industry, setting a goal of reaching a new energy storage capacity of six million kilowatts in three years and achieving the comprehensive market-oriented development of the new energy storage industry by 2030.

Specifically, the province has formed a new energy storage industrial chain revolving around lithium batteries, sodium-ion batteries and related materials, as well as energy storage systems and new energy storage power stations. Currently, it is home to a group of influential enterprises in the lithium battery material industry, covering fields such as negative electrodes, electrolytes, diaphragms and other lithium battery materials.

In December 2023, the province proposed to strengthen the new energy storage battery industry, emphasizing the cultivation and attraction of upstream and downstream enterprises revolving around the fields of lithium-ion batteries, sodium-ion batteries, vanadium redox flow batteries and other new energy storage batteries.

Furthermore, Shanxi also provided strong support for the research and development of key energy storage technologies featuring long life, high safety, large scale, and high capacity, and for the development and production of advantageous products such as lithium battery negative electrode materials and diaphragm materials, so as to expand the industrial scale and promote the large-scale application of advanced energy storage technologies and products.

This year, the province has released a list of provincial-level key engineering projects, covering 23 new energy storage industrial chain projects, including a lithium battery negative electrode materials project with an annual production of 300,000 metric tons and a phase change energy storage materials project with an annual production of 30,000 tons.
