For many years, North China's Shanxi province has been striving to cultivate its new energy industry and accelerate green and low-carbon development, rapidly bringing new energy vehicles (NEVs) powered by electricity, hydrogen, methanol and other fuels to the market.

Jinzhong city, for example, has seen its NEV industrial cluster constantly expanding, with the vehicles sold around the country. Since setting up operations in Jinzhong 10 years ago, the Geely Automobile Jinzhong Base has become the largest automobile enterprise in the province, with the longest industrial chain and the most complete qualifications, producing over 95 percent of the NEVs in the province.

According to statistics, as of the end of 2023, there were a total of 14,551 new energy buses in the province, accounting for 95.65 percent of the total number. All buses in the built-up areas of eight cities, including Taiyuan, Shuozhou, and Xinzhou, have been electrified.

The increasing demand for electric vehicles has accelerated the expansion of the charging market. In 2023, a total of 644 charging stations were built in 131 service areas and one toll station throughout the province, achieving full coverage of charging facilities in highway service areas throughout Shanxi.

In addition, Shanxi provided a series of policies to support the application of NEVs, such as providing subsidies for the purchase of new energy buses, reducing NEV purchase tax, reducing parking fees, and ensuring drivers' right of way.
