In recent years, North China's Shanxi province has been working to investigate and identify its Great Wall sites, and has formulated plans to protect them.

The province has selected 15 sections of the Great Wall sites to make up first group of provincial-level important sections.

The total length of Great Wall sites of different dynasties recognized by the National Cultural Heritage Administration in the province is 1,401.23 kilometers, distributed throughout 39 counties, county-level cities, and districts, including 4,266 sections of wall and ancillary facilities built during eight historical periods.

Shanxi currently has eight sections listed as national-level important Great Wall sections. It is also home to many famous Great Wall scenic spots such as Yanmen Pass and Niangzi Pass, which have attracted the attention of Great Wall enthusiasts.

The Guguan Great Wall, as the oldest and only section of the stone-built inner Great Wall in China, serves as a strong example of how to protect the Great Wall. "Over the past few decades, the Guguan Great Wall has been repaired multiple times, with many people in the village volunteering to carry out the repair work. The city and county governments also attach great importance to the protection, development, and utilization of the Great Wall," said Guo Hongkui, director of the village committee of Xinguan village in Pingding county.

Currently, the province is advancing the construction of Great Wall National Cultural Park. Lu Yi, the director of the Shanxi Provincial Institute of Ancient Architecture and Colored Sculpture and Mural Protection, stated that the province will prioritize the construction of the park to creatively transform the protection achievements of the Great Wall cultural heritage sites.
