Miao Jie, a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and vice-president of Shanxi Vocational College of Art, has developed a deep love for traditional Chinese opera.

Miao has been focusing on the preservation and development of rare opera genres. Shanxi province, known for its rich opera heritage, boasts the largest number of opera genres – 38, of which 31 are considered rare. Last year, Miao conducted field research in locations such as Taigu district, Heshun, Qinyuan, and Shencheng counties in Shanxi, gathering firsthand information on the survival status of local rare opera genres.

In August 2023, the first provincial rare opera show drew unprecedented attention. For nearly 10 days, Miao had in-depth discussions with opera performers, gaining insights into their thoughts and aspirations.

During this year's two sessions, her proposals will focus on education, as well as the protection and inheritance of Chinese opera. This includes incorporating classic opera works into school curricula, establishing special support for opera creation, and support Shanxi's in establishing a vocational university that integrates culture and tourism.

"I hope to expedite the approval process for the establishment of Shanxi Culture and Tourism Vocational University, which would address the current shortage of local talent in the opera arts. I will also promote the 'Shanxi experience' for cultivating high-level talents in the national cultural and tourism industry," said Miao.
