The "Implementation Measures for the Cultural Relics Safety and Responsibility System in Shanxi Province" officially came into effect on Jan 1 in North China's Shanxi province.

The province is rich in cultural relics, with a total of 53,875 immovable cultural relic sites, ranking fourth in numbers in the country.

In recent years, the protection of cultural relics in Shanxi has been steadily improving. However, there are still risks and hazards to cultural relic safety, such as theft, illegal excavation, and fire incidents. The province's capacity to keep cultural relics safe needs to be enhanced.

The circular puts forward 22 targeted policy measures in five chapters. Yu Zhenlong, deputy director of the Shanxi Cultural Relics Bureau, stated that the issuance of this circular is of great significance to the improvement of the province's cultural relic safety and responsibility system, as well as to the legal protection and management of cultural relics.

The bureau will assess the implementation of local responsibilities for cultural relic protection and supervision, urging municipal governments to fulfill their responsibilities as the main enforcers of local cultural relic safety management. It will also accelerate the exploration of satellite remote sensing applications in law enforcement and inspection.
