Shanxi athletes make their mark in shooting, swimming events at Asian Games

Zhao Nan and Yang Chang, two young athletes from North China's Shanxi province, gained medals from the shooting and swimming events at the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, East China's Zhejiang province on Sept 27. 

Zhao, together with her teammates Feng Sixuan and Liu Rui, earned a silver medal in the 25m pistol women's final with a total score of 1,756. 

The 19-year-old Zhao from Yangquan city won three silver medals in the youth group competition at the ISSF World Championship Cairo in October 2022. At the Lima 2023 WSPS World Championships, she won three bronze medals in the 10m air pistol, 10m air pistol mixed team event, and 25m standard pistol event. At the 2023 National Shooting Championships, Zhao and Liu Jinyao won the 10m air pistol mixed team event. 

"Getting such results at major competitions is something to be proud of," said her coach Yu Wei, who praised Zhao's ability to keep cool under pressure and make adjustments during the competition.

In the women's 100m breaststroke final held on the same day, Yang Chang from Jincheng city won the bronze medal with a time of 1 minute and 7.01 seconds. This is the fourth medal won by Shanxi athletes at the 19th Asian Games. 

Born in 2001, Yang has been developing her swimming talent since the age of 6. She finished sixth in the women's 400m individual medley and fifth in the women's 200m individual medley at the 2018 Jakarta Asian Games, and won the bronze medal in the women's 100m breaststroke at the 14th National Games in 2021. 

At this year's National Swimming Championships, she won gold in the women's 100m breaststroke and silver in the 50m breaststroke. 

On Sept 29, Yang will participate in the women's 4x100-meter medley relay with her teammates at the Asian Games.
