A press conference marking the latest achievements and cases of note as Shanxi province embraces an energy revolution was held on Sept 7, as part of the 2023 Taiyuan Energy Low Carbon Development Forum.
Hosted by the Shanxi Provincial Government in North China and organized by Shanxi Development and Reform Commission, the conference was attended by about 400 representatives from government departments, enterprises, and research institutes.
During the conference, the Shanxi Development and Reform Commission shared 57 cases in the developing energy industry and summarized the highlights and successful practices of Shanxi in energy consumption, supply, technologies, systematic revolution, and international cooperation.
Shanxi has been the top coal producer in China since 2019. In the first seven months of 2023, its coal output reached 787 million metric tons, allowing the province to maintain its leading position and setting an example for eco-friendly and intelligent coal mining nationwide.
The electricity generated by the province so far this year has reached 30.62 million kilowatts. In 2022, it topped 146.37 billion kilowatt-hours, making Shanxi the second-largest power supplier in China.
Significant progress has been made in the development of new and clean energy, with this accounting for 43 percent of installed capacity and 26 percent of total power generation at the end of July.
Additionally, the development and use of unconventional natural gas, hydrogen energy, methanol, and geothermal energy have all been accelerated.
Significant progress has been made in promoting reformed energy consumption in Shanxi, with consumption per unit of GDP decreasing by 13.22 percent over the past four years.
A total of 48.84 million square meters of eco-friendly buildings have been built in the province. Datong Energy Resources Exhibition Building in Datong city in the province was awarded the Leadership in Sustainable Design and Performance Award by the World Green Building Council in 2022.
A series of national research platforms related to the energy sector, including Huairou Laboratory Shanxi Research Institute, a national key laboratory for the clean and efficient utilization of coal-based energy, and a national key lab for intelligent mining equipment and technology, have been set up with some still under construction in Shanxi.
