Shanxi economic development off to strong start in 2023

The industrial, investment, and consumption indicators of North China's Shanxi province showed rapid growth in January and February, according to the Shanxi Statistics Bureau on March 20.  

The added value of industrial enterprises above designated size – those with annual revenue of 20 million yuan ($2.91 million) or more – in the province increased 6.9 percent, 4.5 percentage points higher than the national growth rate. 

The province continued to increase productivity and achieved a consistently secure and stable supply of coal, gas and electricity. The province's raw coal output was 214.97 million metric tons, an increase of 10.4 percent, while the output of unconventional natural gas increased 7.4 percent, and power generation grew 5.1 percent. 

The province's fixed asset investment increased 6.3 percent and total retail sales of consumer goods reached 119.91 billion yuan, up 3.1 percent. 

Tourism has shown significant recovery. The number of visitors to key scenic spots in the province was 11.105 million in January and February, an increase of 55.2 percent year-on-year, while ticket revenue was 300 million yuan, up 152.0 percent. 

The province's fiscal revenue fell slightly, while market prices rose moderately. The general public budget revenue was 68.60 billion yuan, down 0.7 percent, while the general public budget expenditure was 80.67 billion yuan, up 4.2 percent. Consumer price rose 1.5 percent.

In addition, 51,000 people found employment in urban areas across the province, an increase of 8,000 year-on-year and accounting for 11.4 percent of the annual target.
