Shanxi province's members of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) recently submitted joint proposals to the CPPCC National Committee.

These national political advisers suggested accelerating the legislation on geographical indications (GIs) in order to help develop regional characteristic industries.

GIs are important intellectual property rights, and are effective carriers for promoting the development of regional economies.

Shanxi has 27 GI protected products and 108 GI certification trademarks, but current problems in GI include lack of unified legislation and insufficient value play.

To this end, the CPPCC National Committee members suggested implementing national laws on GIs. This will give full play to GIs, accelerate the enhancement of the brand value of GIs, cultivate the cultural connotation of GIs, and promote the cross-border integrated development of the GI industry.
