Shanxi province has made efforts to boost economic development, realize industrial and digital transformation and promote high-quality development. 

Vitalizing traditional industries 

In 2022, Shanxi upgraded traditional advantageous sectors and modernized the industrial chains. 

As an important energy base in China, Shanxi seeks to help ensure national energy security. In 2022, Shanxi's coal output exceeded 1.3 billion metric tons, accounting for nearly one third of the national output. The province deepened energy reforms with the nation's "dual-carbon" goal, focusing on the transformation and upgrading of traditional industries such as coal coking, metallurgy and electricity. It has made plans for the clean and low-carbon development of coal and diversified utilization and comprehensive storage. 

To date, Shanxi has built a total of 37 intelligent coal mines and 993 intelligent mining working faces, and advanced coal production capacity, accounting for more than 78 percent of the total.

Shanxi has also established a promotional mechanism for the transformation and upgrading of traditional industries to improve quality and efficiency. The province has been adopting the latest technologies, equipment and models, which has brought new vitality to traditional industries. 

Booming emerging sectors 

Shanxi has continued its efforts to advance industries including high-end equipment manufacturing, new materials, environmental protection and digitalization, to stimulate informatization and industrialization and integrate innovation and industrial chains.

Last year, Shanxi issued 100 key technologies and 100 project-oriented technological innovation catalogs and plans regarding pillar industries, promoted the research and development of 160 major technologies, and implemented 150 innovative projects. 

Shanxi has constructed innovation centers covering manufacturing, enterprise technology and R&D. Key industrial chains including new energy vehicles and hydrogen energy have achieved full coverage of technology centers above the provincial level. A total of 32 enterprises in emerging industries have surpassed the industry average and 19 enterprises have reached the benchmark standard.

The province has been optimizing its favorable policies and services to speed up the growth of strategic emerging industries.

Data show that from January to November in 2022, strategic emerging industries recorded an annual growth rate of 16.4 percent, of which the new energy vehicles sector grew by 75.2 percent, and the energy-saving and environmental protection industries surged by 40.3 percent. 

Empowering development with digital intelligence 

Shanxi has focused on the digital economy to empower high-quality development. 

Empowered by digital intelligence, Shanxi is improving economic and social development. The province is striving to achieve industrial digitalization, digital industrialization, and data value and governance digitalization to create a healthy business environment for digital transformation, accelerate the construction of new infrastructure and strengthen core technologies.

Shanxi has accelerated the construction of infrastructure such as 5G network, mobile internet of things, and industrial internet. A total of 67,000 5G base stations have been built and 466,300 data centers are in use or under construction, ranking among the top in the country and first in Central China.

Fruitful results in the digital industry have made Shanxi an industrial leader in China. That includes the production scale and technical level of the third-generation semiconductor silicon carbide substrate materials and the photovoltaic monocrystalline cells and components, as well as the production of LED packaging and display modules.

Baidu's Shanxi data labeling base has become the largest of its kind in the country, and a number of local companies, such as Shanxi Cloud Era Technology Co Ltd, Keda Automation Control and Tsingzone Technology, have become industry leaders in the software and big data industries.
