Shanxi industries see strong growth over past 10 years

Shanxi province has seen its industrial system improve, industrial scale expand, industrial chain become more complete, and enterprises develop markedly since 2012. 

Last year, the number of industries in the province above designated size reached 40. The province has formed an industrial system with coal, electric power, coke, steel, nonferrous metals, chemicals, building materials serving as the pillar industries, and high-end equipment, new materials, digital economy, energy conservation and environmental protection serving as supporting industries. 

Traditional industries have accelerated transformation and upgrading. The proportion of advanced coal production capacity, advanced steelmaking capacity and advanced coking capacity in the province have increased to 75 percent, 47 percent, and 64.5 percent respectively.

From 2016 to 2021, the added value of strategic emerging industries increased by an average annual rate of 9.7 percent, 3.8 percentage points higher than that of industries above designated size.

The core industrial revenue of the province's digital economy reached 194.8 billion yuan ($27.38 billion), while the scale of the digital economy exceeded 500 billion yuan.

The province's industrial added value increased from 633 billion yuan in 2012 to 1.02 trillion yuan in 2021, an average annual growth rate of 5.7 percent.

The number of industrial enterprises above designated size rose from 3,905 in 2012 to 6,834, an average annual increase of 325.

The profits of said enterprises increased from 80.7 billion yuan in 2012 to 295 billion yuan in 2021.

Technological innovation among enterprises has continued to improve. There are 444 enterprise technology centers at or above the provincial level. And enterprise investment in research and development has increased. 

In addition, Shanxi has promoted the clean recycling of bulk industrial solid waste and implemented a standardized management system to help renewable resource industries boost green and low-carbon development.
