The Shanxi Bureau of Cultural Relics recently reviewed Shanxi province's progress in the cultural relics cause over the past decade.

In the past 10 years, Shanxi carried out the first national census of movable cultural relics and special resource surveys on grotto temples, stone inscriptions, cultural relics, painted sculptures and murals.

The first supercomputing center of the national cultural and museum system was established at the Yungang Grottoes Research Institute. The Academician Scientific and Technological Innovation Center of Shanxi Cultural Heritage Protection and the Shanxi Provincial Key Laboratory of Grottoes Protection and Inheritance were set up at the institute.

The protection of murals in Yongle Palace was comprehensively strengthened in terms of funds, protection forces, and technical measures.

During this period, the province implemented key projects such as the rescue and maintenance of the Ancient City Wall of Pingyao and the protection of important sections of the Great Wall, improving the overall situation of cultural relics protection.

The protection of cultural relics has been changing from physical protection to preventive and digital protection.

A special protection mechanism for 39 national treasure-level cultural relics is being established, and 18 provincial demonstration areas for the protection and utilization of cultural relics are being created.

The past decade also saw fruitful achievements in archaeological discoveries. The province carried out over 30 archaeological excavations, having unearthed nearly 10,000 relics.

The porcelain kiln relic site in Guzhen town of Hejin, the Jiuwutou site in Wenxi county, and Xiwubi site in Jiangxian county were selected as China's top 10 new archaeological discoveries.

The development of the museum sector achieved impressive results. The number of museums in the province has increased from 114 to 197 over the past 10 years, and a diverse provincial museum system has taken shape.

The Shanxi Bronze Museum and the Shanxi Geological Museum were completed and opened to the public, and all 11 municipal-level comprehensive museums in the province have opened to the public. The construction of museum cities in Datong and Taiyuan has been progressing.

During the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-25), Shanxi plans to cultivate 600 professionals in the cultural relics sector free of charge to expand grassroots cultural relic protection teams.
