Yang Rong, a community police officer in Taiyuan – capital city of North China's Shanxi province – provided insights into a long career on the beat in an interview via video link on March 8, during the fifth session of the 13th National People's Congress (NPC) in Beijing.

Yang shared her stories and experiences gained while working as a community police officer for 30 years.

Ever since being elected as a deputy to the NPC in 2018, Yang said she had combined doing her job to the best of her abilities with fulfilling her legislative duties.

"Years of experience in my community has allowed me to uncover problems, such as family issues and troubles involving children," she said.

After visiting many schoolteachers, parents and left-behind children and consulting legal experts, Yang submitted a motion related to legislation on family education, which was adopted. The law took effect earlier this year.

She said its adoption had been a great inspiration, encouraging her to perform her duties better. Yang said it had also helped her better understand whole-process democracy.
