The pressing question of how to promote and develop traditional opera and pass on traditional art better has always been of concern to Li Guilian – a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) – from North China's Shanxi province.

For years, the woman working as the artistic director of the China National Shanxi Jin Opera Co has been promoting the inheritance and development of excellent traditional culture, carrying out research and staging high-quality opera creations, and improving the training of young opera artists.

After Li began serving as a CPPCC National Committee member, she submitted many proposals calling for the greater protection of local opera – especially Jin Opera which originated and was popular in Shanxi.

As the annual sessions of the National People's Congress and the CPPCC is around the corner, Li is preparing her new proposals.

"I have prepared several proposals related to opera this year. I suggest that screenwriters create high-quality works of art by exploring traditions and carrying out innovation," she said.

"Support for innovative genres of opera should be strengthened and more attention should be paid to the survival and development of folk theater troupes," Li added.
