Nine hospitals in North China's Shanxi province were recently listed in the 2021 China Hospital Science and Technology Evaluation Metrics (STEM) Report, released by the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences.

The China Hospital STEM Report is based on an evaluation system that considers scientific and technological output, an institution's academic impact, as well as scientific and technological conditions. The report is said to be an important indicator of an organization's sci-tech innovation and sustainable development capabilities.

The province's hospitals included are: Shanxi Bethune Hospital, Shanxi Provincial People's Hospital, the First Hospital of Shanxi Medical University, the Second Hospital of Shanxi Medical University, the Children's Hospital of Shanxi, Shanxi Provincial Cancer Hospital, Shanxi Eye Hospital, the Fourth People's Hospital of Taiyuan and General Hospital of the Taiyuan Iron and Steel Group.

Their inclusion reflects Shanxi's medical strengths in the list of the top 100 hospitals in 23 medical disciplines and departments, such as thoracic surgery, orthopedic surgery, nursing, psychiatry, otolaryngology, ophthalmology and tuberculosis.

In recent years, the province has implemented its scientific and technological innovation plan for medicine. It has also improved its innovation and development system for medical-education-research collaboration – as well as industry-university-research integration, medicine-artificial intelligence integration and medical-industry integration.

As a result, the scientific research and innovation capabilities of the medical and health institutions in the province have been significantly improved.
