A key technological research on smart ice and snow field program conducted by the North University of China – based in North China's Shanxi province – utilized information and intelligent modalities, to help athletes to participate in the Winter Olympics in 2022 upgrade their training.

Athletes in the China Administration of Sport for Persons with Disabilities recently used the latest achievements of the program – precise positioning algorithms and trajectory systems for ice and snow sports at high speeds – to carry out curved technical training.

With the technical modes of wearable devices, synchronized multi-point cameras and drone tracking, the system is said to quantify an athlete's movement postures and sliding speeds in real time.

This enables the coach to observe the body state of the athlete during the training session in detail, to improve training methods and enhance the athlete's skills.

According to Chou Xiujian, program leader and professor at North University of China, from last winter to April this year, the system has been used in more than 80 tests. These have covered alpine skiing, snowboarding, and cross-country skiing – with the real-time images and the timely feedback of data winning the favor of coaches.

The program undertaken by North University of China is a key special support project of the National Key R&D Program for the Winter Olympics. It has received financial support of 26.03 million yuan ($4.01 million) from the central government.

The program focuses on key technologies for constructing smart ice and snow fields. It also conducts research on smart stadium construction, special database establishments, simulation monitoring system construction, artificial intelligence decision-making assistance and smart stadium demonstration applications.

The outcome is expected to effectively guarantee that the 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in Beijing will go ahead smoothly.
