The Biosafety Level 3 (P3) Laboratory of Shanxi Center for Disease Control and Prevention broke ground on April 27 in Taiyuan, capital of North China's Shanxi province.

Shanxi Construction Investment Group Co will construct the project in two phases. The first phase of the project includes the P3 laboratory, the Shanxi Key Laboratory of Major Infectious Disease Prevention, Control, Diagnosis and Treatment, the State Key Laboratory of Occupational Disease Prevention and Shanxi Vaccine Joint Research and Development Center.

The project's first phase is expected to be completed and put into use by the end of 2023, which will significantly enhance Shanxi's infectious disease detection capabilities and rapid response capabilities to prevent and control sudden contagious diseases. It will also improve the R&D level of vaccines, new drugs and testing reagents.

Lin Wu, governor of Shanxi province, addressed the groundbreaking ceremony, requesting that Shanxi Center for Disease Control and Prevention take the project construction as an opportunity to accelerate the establishment of a first-class provincial disease control center in China. He added that the center would improve the health and well-being of the people and serve the transformation and development of Shanxi.
