Shanxi province will continue to reduce carbon dioxide emissions in 2021, adopting tree planting and energy-saving methods to offset the carbon dioxide emissions already produced, according to the fourth session of the 13th Shanxi Provincial People's Congress, which concluded on Jan 23 in the provincial capital, Taiyuan city.

The province will advance the construction of intelligent coal mines that adopt 5G communications and advanced control technology. It will also build 1,000 intelligent mining areas and 40 coal mines that practice eco-friendly mining.

Unconventional natural gas production will be further promoted, with this year's output goal set at 12 billion cubic meters. Authorities will improve the electricity price mechanism for strategic emerging industries to guide power generation companies to reduce costs and increase efficiency.

Shanxi will also promote wind and solar power projects, expand the utilization of geothermal energy and the development of biomass energy, to realize the green transformation of the province's energy supply.

At present, all coal-fired power generation units operating in Shanxi have completed ultra-low emission transformation, and the utilization rate of new energy such as photovoltaic and wind power has been improved. New energy and renewable energy power generation units account for more than 30 percent of the province's total.
