Shanxi University of Chinese Medicine was officially established in 1989 with the approval of the Ministry of Education. It was authorized to grant master's degrees in 2001, to enroll international students in 2002 and to enroll students from Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau in 2008.

After steady growth spanning 30 years, the prestigious higher education institute has developed its own distinctive professionalism in the field of traditional Chinese medicine. It has established itself as a center of research and innovation, for training professionals, for health care and for passing on cultural knowledge and values -- where learning and teaching, research, medical care and service is perfectly integrated.

The university is also a center of international collaboration authorized by the Ministry of Science and Technology and one of the first pioneer universities to reform teaching plans for the education of Excellent Medical Workers.

It now has two campuses in Taiyuan and Jinzhong cities, covering a total area of over 65 hectares and features strikingly styled buildings and sculptures about traditional Chinese medicine, as well as an impressive lake and a herbal garden.

There is a library that uses an advanced electronics service system and computer network service system at the university, with a collection of 950,000 paper books and 3.1 million electronic books, as well as 36 databases.

The university has 14 colleges and 10,604 registered students on campus, of whom 835 are postgraduates.

It offers 21 undergraduate majors, covering a wide range in the fields of medicine, science, engineering, management and agriculture.

The university also has four affiliated hospitals offering a wide and comprehensive range of services in traditional Chinese medicine, as well as 12 key academic disciplines recognized by the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

It also boasts a faculty team of 4,183, including two national traditional Chinese medicine masters, 15 prominent educators in the province and 18 prominent traditional Chinese medicine doctors in Shanxi.

In addition, the university provides strong scientific and technical support and a positive academic atmosphere for international education. That's because of its well-developed infrastructure, sophisticated laboratory facilities, state-funded key research and development projects, ample research funds, well-qualified teams of senior scholars and world-wide international cooperation and exchange programs.
