North China's Shanxi province will continue to divert 600 million cubic meters of water from the Yellow River to the Fenhe River and supply water to the Yongding River and Sushui River this year to maintain river flows, according to a statement by the Shanxi Provincial Department of Water Resources on March 31.

The province will strictly control the total annual consumption of water resources within a limit of 9.3 billion cu m, explore the construction of ecological demonstration rivers and lakes, as well as engage in further river and lake management and protection.

Meanwhile, it will strengthen its shoreline management of rivers and lakes and integrate its management and protection of mountains, forests, farmlands and lakes.

Water pollution of the major rivers and lakes will be further treated to ensure that over 73 percent of the water in them reaches national water quality standards.
