One of five major coal companies in Shanxi province, Lu'an Group, based in Changzhi city, is engaged in the modern coal chemical business with a focus on fine coal-based chemical products, as well as the biological health business featuring peony oil extraction. It also engages in financial services.

The company produced 74.33 million metric tons of coal, generated 161.64 billion yuan ($23.62 billion) in revenue and 210 million yuan in profits in 2016. It had 169 subsidiaries including one listed subsidiary and nearly 100,000 employees by the end of 2016. It ranked 370th in the Fortune 500 rankings in 2016 and sixth among Chinese coal companies.
