The Institute of Solid State Physics at Shanxi Datong University, in partnership with Green Elephant Terahertz Technology (Shanxi) Co, launched an innovative terahertz spectroscopy database for 100 mineral pigments on Dec 23.

The database, which features over 1,500 terahertz spectral entries, is freely accessible to scientists, conservationists, educators, and students worldwide, with the condition that the data source is cited in any resulting publications.

It offers significant potential for applications such as identifying mural pigments, diagnosing deterioration in outdoor artifacts, and characterizing restoration materials.

The database's construction took nearly three years and involved extensive sample collection across nine global locations, including China, Laos, and Brazil.

The pigments span a full spectrum of colors, balancing scientific research needs with practical restoration requirements.

This advancement will promote the standardization and routine use of terahertz technology for the detection, protection, and evaluation of cultural heritage. The technology can also empower related industries, such as mineral pigment production, environmental monitoring, and new material development.
