A cultural exchange delegation from the city of Datong in North China's Shanxi province recently visited its friendship city of Omuta in Japan, marking the first high-level meeting between the two cities in seven years.

Datong and Omuta became friendship cities in October 1981 – forming Shanxi province's first international friendship city partnership and China's 32nd.

Over the years, they've engaged in extensive exchanges and cooperation across various fields – including culture, sports, education, healthcare, agricultural technology, staff member exchanges, environmental protection and ancient city preservation.

The efforts are widely said to have yielded significant achievements, defining a partnership model for local government cooperation between China and Japan.

On arrival, the delegation met with Omuta officials, reflecting on the longstanding friendship and exploring future collaborations in cultural tourism, elderly care and youth exchanges.

During the visit, Datong and Omuta signed a memorandum of understanding to further promote government-level exchanges and facilitate cultural interactions, including hosting a Yungang Grottoes photography exhibition and lectures about Omuta.

All in all, the visit underscored the commitment of both cities to fostering closer ties and mutual understanding – paving the way for their continued collaboration.
