Seminar gathers wisdom for digital preservation of grotto temples

The 2nd Yellow River Culture Grotto Temple Alliance Digital Seminar was held on Oct 10 in Datong, North China's Shanxi province.

The seminar was co-hosted by the Yungang Academy, Yellow River Culture Grotto Temple Alliance, cultural relics bureaus of Datong and Taiyuan cities, Cultural Heritage Institute of Zhejiang University, and Taiyuan cultural relics protection research institute. 

The focus of the seminar was to accelerate the digital preservation of cultural relics, ensure the complete, accurate, and authentic permanent storage of cultural heritage information, and to provide detailed, scientific data support for the protection, research, display, education, and dissemination of grotto temples.

Over 180 experts and scholars from more than 20 cultural institutions related to grottoes as well as over 30 scientific research institutions including Peking University, Zhejiang University, and Wuhan University participated in discussions on the digitization and revitalization of grottoes and temple cultural relics. They shared the latest academic development and research achievements in the field of cultural relic digitalization to better utilize data related to cultural heritage. 

At the same time, the "Pearl of the Great River" Yellow River Culture Grotto Temple Alliance Conservation Achievements Exhibition opened at the same time at the Yungang Academy, which is committed to the protection and promotion of the Yungang Grottoes in Datong. 

Through physical exhibits and visual displays, the exhibition demonstrates the conservation achievements of major grottoes and temples in the country over the past decade, including preservation surveys, digital archive construction, and display utilization.
