Datong city in North China's Shanxi province has an efficient transportation network and it is one of the 42 comprehensive transport hubs in China.

The city is geographically located within the triangle of Shanxi province, Hebei province and Inner Mongolia autonomous region in North China. It is situated about 330 kilometers from the national capital of Beijing and is located about 290 km from Taiyuan city -- the provincial capital of Shanxi -- and lies about 300 km by road from Hohhot, the provincial capital of Inner Mongolia.

The Beijing-Datong Highway and Datong-Yuncheng Highway intersect at Datong -- while the Datong-Hohhot, Rongcheng-Wuhai, Tianzhen-Datong, Lingqiu-Shanyin, Datong-Hunyuan and Guangling-Hunyuan highways are connected to the Datong Ring Highway.

The city has achieved three-hour drive access to the national capital of Beijing, as well as to the cities of Taiyuan, Hohhot and Zhangjiakou.

In 2020, the mileage of the city's roads in service reached 12,749 km. Among these, some 589 kilometers of thoroughfares were highways.

In terms of railways, the city is the starting point for China's first double-track electrified and heavy-duty coal transportation special line -- Datong-Qinhuangdao Railway.

This line is the main channel for coal distribution in Shanxi, Shaanxi provinces and western Inner Mongolia -- with the channel widely regarded as the most important coal transportation artery in the country.

In terms of air services, Datong Yungang Airport operates 17 air routes to 26 major cities across China, including flights to Shanghai, Guangzhou and Beijing.
