The implementation plan for reconstruction and upgrading of Yungang district's independent industrial mining zone during the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-25) recently passed review by the National Development and Reform Commission.

Yungang district is located in Datong city, North China's Shanxi province.

Located in the northeast of Yungang district, approximately 22 kilometers away from the core area of Datong, Yungang independent industrial mining zone covers 11 coal production areas and living areas. It has produced 1.7 billion metric tons of coal and paid more than 34 billion yuan ($5.24) in taxes since 1949, contributing a lot to the socio-economic development of Shanxi and China at large.

The central government will include the district in its budgetary investment support plan to transform and develop resource-based regions during the 14th Five-Year Plan period.

According to the plan, from 2021 to 2023, the zone's renovation and upgrading project will comprise 21 sub-projects and have a total investment of about 2.60 billion yuan. The sub-projects involve risk-avoidance and relocation of residents, infrastructure and public service facilities, ecological restoration and environmental improvement, and industrial platforms.
