The former site of Shanxi University (SXU) was built in 1902 and the university is one of three earliest national universities in China, making it of important historical significance.

The unique architectural style of the former site of SXU reflects the collision and fusion of Chinese and Western cultures in the early 20th century.

The existing structures of the site include a main building, a gatehouse and part of the courtyard wall.

The main building facing south has a length of 149 meters and a width of 36 meters and covers an area of 5,364 square meters. The turret and castellations on the roof of the building constitute an undulating contour line and the rough stone window covers in the medieval style reflect the characteristics of the British New Tudor style.

The gatehouse is a combination of traditional Chinese wooden pillars and beams with British New Tudor style structures.
