City God Temple

This was built with a “harmony between heaven and humans” principle, with South St as an axis and an east-west symmetry and the temple as the prominent site. The City God Temple’s long history and cultural connotations are outstanding and it is an official site for Taoist worship.

The main hall is in the center, with the Six Cao Hell, God of Earth Temple, Zaojun Temple, and God of Fortune Temple in the surrounding. The construction and buildings are well preserved, making the temple itself a magnificent rarity for county-level temples. It was built in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), with a standard layout and a total floor space of 7,302 square meters.

It is an integration of Confucianism, Taoism, and folk culture connotations, as reflected in the clay sculptures and murals and the construction style, the buildings, woodcarvings, and tiles.

Its unique structure, height, ornamentations, carved wooden sparrow pattern, and glazed tile follow the strict etiquette and it reflects the economy and wealth of the merchants of the county during the Ming and Qing dynasties and the culture demands of the times.
