Datong is one of 42 national transportation hubs. Its highway density reaches 89.2 kilometers per 100 square kilometers. 

Expressways: The Beijing-Datong, Ereenhot-Guangzhou and Rongcheng-Wuhai expressways connect Datong with Beijing, Taiyuan, Hohhot, Ulaanqab and Shijiazhuang.

Railways: The Datong-Zhangjiakou high-speed railway is under construction. Travel time from Datong to Beijing will be cut to about 100 minutes when it opens. The Taiyuan-Xi'an section of the Datong-Xi'an high-speed railway is now in operation, and its Datong-Yuanping section is expected to be constructed this year.

The Datong-Qinhuangdao Railway ranks No.1 in the world for shipping coal. It covers the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei area and has an annual shipping capacity of 400 million tons. It is mainly used for shipping coal produced in Shanxi Province, the Western Economic Zone of Inner Mongolia and Shaanxi Province.

Airlines: Datong's Yungang airport is at the 4C level for civil use. It operates flights to South Korea as well as China's Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Shenyang, Nanjing and Xiamen. Flights from Datong can reach all airports of Shanxi Province. Datong is also a channel for international transit for flights from the Beijing Capital airport, Shanghai airports, Guangzhou airport and Hong Kong airport.
