The number of industrial enterprises above designated size – those with annual revenue of more than 20 million yuan ($3.08 million) – in North China's Shanxi province increased to 5,400 in 2020, up from 3,548 in 2016, according to Shanxi Department of Industry and Information Technology on March 5.

Shanxi's position on the national ranking of industrial growth rate jumped to eighth in 2020 from the 29th position in 2016.

During the 13th Five-Year Plan period (2016-20), the province's industrial enterprises' independent innovation capabilities were much improved, manufacturing several significant products such as aerospace-grade carbon fiber, silicon carbide and human-sourced type III collagen. Breakthroughs were also made for major key technologies in quantum communications and synthetic biology.

Authorities also took steps to advance Shanxi's high-quality industrial transformation. The province's strategic emerging industries had an average annual growth rate of 7.8 percent in added value. High-end equipment manufacturing, new materials, the digital economy, energy conservation and environmental protection industries all exceeded 100 billion in output value.

There were eight national-level pilot demonstration enterprises for big data industrial development operating in Shanxi.

New progress was also made in green industrial development, with 37 green factories, three green industrial parks, 16 green design products and two green supply chains having been created.
