Advantages of Yangquan
Located in the eastern part of Shanxi province, Yangquan is a new industrial city and the political, economic and cultural center of eastern Shanxi. It now has jurisdiction over Pingding county, Yu county, and the Economic and Technological Development Zone. With an area of 4,559 square kilometers, it has a population of 1.41 million. It was the first city built by the Chinese Communist Party.
Yangquan is a gateway to Shanxi and Hebei. Located between Taiyuan and Shijiazhuang, two provincial capitals highly complementary to Yangquan's economy, it also connects the developed eastern region with the underdeveloped western region, and the Beijing-Tianjin-Tanggu Region and coastal developed areas with the mainland.
Yangquan is located in the northeast of Qinshui Coalfield. The coal resources have the advantages of shallow burial, large reserves, easy mining and high quality. The Yangquan Mine Area has 1,835 square kilometers of coal mines and 17.3 billion tons of geological reserves, of which 1,051 square kilometers of coal mines and 10.2 billion tons of geological reserves are contained in the administrative region of Yangquan. More than 70% of the area's coal is low sulfur, low ash and high quality anthracite with ash content of 10-20%, sulfur content of 0.5-0.7%, and calorific value of more than 8,000 kcal/kg.
There are 53 coal mines in the city, producing 51.1 million tons of raw coal. The main products, including washed moderate coal, washed small coal, washed coal, slack coal, spray-blow coal and other varieties, are mainly sold to 16 provinces and cities such as Hebei, Shandong, Jiangsu and Shanghai, and are exported to Brazil, Japan, South Korea, Belgium and other countries. In recent years, in order to achieve sustainable development, the Yangquan coal industry adjusted its industrial and product structure, integrated coal resources, actively promoted the integration of coal, electricity and aluminum and the development of the coal chemical industry, accelerating the transformation with the aid of coal resources.
Yangquan is rich in bauxite, with 710 million tons of reserves. Relying on those abundant resources, Yangquan's aluminum industry is booming. After more than 20 years of construction, an aluminum industry chain with alumina, electrolytic aluminum, aluminum profiles and other leading products has been formed. Based on advantages in coal and electricity, the city will focus on the development of serial products such as alumina, electrolytic aluminum, aluminum profiles, aluminum foil, plate and strip, wire rod, and alloy rod, insist on value-added processing, and implement asset integration, capital reorganization and property right reform. In each of the next few years, the city will produce 1.2 million tons of alumina and 500,000 tons of electrolytic aluminum, making the aluminum industry an important competitive industry in the city.
With good thermal power development conditions, Yangquan is the nearest city to the east in the West-to-East Power Transmission Project, and is one of the regions with the lowest transmission costs. At present, there are six power generation enterprises in the city with a total installed capacity of 2.80 million kilowatts. The main power generation enterprises such as Shanxi Yangguang Power Generation Co., Ltd. (4× 320,000 kilowatts), Shanxi Hepo Power Generation Co., Ltd. (2× 350,000 kilowatts), Zhaofeng Coal Gangue Power Plant of Yangquan Coal Group (3× 135,000 kilowatts), Nanmei Longchuan Coal Gangue Power Plant (2× 135,000 kilowatts) will form a total installed capacity of 7.5 million kilowatts in the future.
In terms of photovoltaic power generation, the city has now completed a grid-connected ground photovoltaic power station with a total installed capacity of 1,196,800 kilowatts, including the 100,000 kilowatts project of Yu County Jinyang New Energy Power Generation Co, Ltd, the 15,000 kilowatts project of Xiyan Town CGN, the 20,000 kilowatts project of Yangquan Changsheng New Energy Solutions Inc, and the 50,000 kilowatts project of Pingding Dongfang New Energy Power Generation Co, Ltd. Almost 12,000 kilowatts of photovoltaic power were generated in counties and districts, and the plan for a photovoltaic base with a total scale of 2.2 million kilowatts has been approved by National Energy Administration. Grid connection of 1 million kilowatts has now been realized.
In terms of wind power generation, the city has achieved grid connection, with installed capacity of 117,800 kilowatts, including the 49,500 kilowatts first-phase project, the 48,300 kilowatts second-phase project and the 20,000 kilowatts third-phase project of CGN in Yu county.
Yangquan's bauxite is famous for its large reserves, high grade, few impurities, shallow burial and easy mining. The proven recoverable deposits of bauxite in Yangquan is 710 million tons, the second in the world (only to Guyana), and the alumina content is over 65%, making it one of the main bauxite bases in China. Large enterprises include Yu County Xixiaoping Refractories Co, Ltd, Yangquan Xiaqian Refractories Co, Ltd, Shanxi Holy Fire Furnace Materials Co, Ltd and other enterprises. The products, which are sold to major domestic steel enterprises and exported to other places of the world, enjoy a good reputation in domestic and foreign markets.
Yangquan is rich in tourism resources. The numerous scenic spots, historic sites and natural landscapes are impressive. Famous scenic spots include Niangzi Pass, the ninth pass of the Great Wall, Guguan Great Wall which was built 150 years before Badaling Great Wall, Mount Cang, where the orphan of Zhao was hidden during the Spring and Autumn Period, Guanshan Academy, where scholars lived in seclusion, the former residence of Shi Pingmei, a famous modern female writer and one of the four talented women of the Republic of China, Guanwang Temple, a treasure of ancient Chinese architecture, Liangjiazhai Hot Spring, a radon hot spring with a water temperature of 80 degrees, Yuhuang Cave, the first cave in Taihang, and Shinao Mountain Forest Park, which has the Memorial (Hall) for the world-famous Hundred-Regiment Campaign. Other scenic spots under development include Dagu Village, Yaolin Temple Forest Park, Wanhua Cave and Yuhua Cave. At present, there are 16 scenic spots in the city that have been formed and opened to the outside world, including 4 AAAA scenic spots, 3 AAA scenic spots and 3 AA scenic spots.
As Yangquan is an important coal energy and heavy chemical industry base of Shanxi, it has been a key area for national investment for many years. The reform and opening-up policy has injected vitality into its economy which has developed continuously, rapidly and healthily. After 70 years of construction, Yangquan has gradually formed an economic system with coal and electric power industries as its pillars and electrolytic aluminum, refractory materials, magnetic materials, ceramics, cement, valves, powder metallurgy, polyvinyl chloride and other leading industries as additional components. With more than 2400 kinds of products, it has formed a strong industrial foundation and relatively strong technical strength.
The density of railways and highway in Yangquan ranks top in the province. The operation of Shijiazhuang–Taiyuan Railway, Shuozhou-Huanghua Port Railway, Yangquan-She County Railway and Yangquan-Yu County Railway, and the Shijiazhuang-Taiyuan High-speed Passenger Dedicated Line has greatly shortened the distance between Yangquan and surrounding central cities. It takes only 30 minutes to Taiyuan and Shijiazhuang, and only two hours to travel to Beijing. Yangquan has now become an important railway hub connecting Beijing, Tianjin, Tangshan, Henan, Hebei and Shanxi. Thanks to the 307 National Highway, 207 National Highway, Taiyuan-Jiuguan Expressway, Yangquan-Wutaishan Expressway, Beijing-Kunming Expressway and Xinzhong Expressway, it takes only one hour to Taiyuan and Shijiazhuang, and it is only four hours' drive to Beijing. Based on this framework, a crisscross traffic network is formed with the urban area as the center, radiating counties and towns under jurisdiction and neighboring provinces and cities. Located 100 kilometers away from Taiyuan and Shijiazhuang Airport, Yangquan has convenient air traffic. There are several civil aviation ticket offices in the city, making tickets buying and goods delivery convenient.
Yangquan is rich in water resources with a total volume of 1.48 billion cubic meters. Springs in eastern Niangzi Pass are the main sources of water for industries and residents in the city. At present, Yangquan city's daily water supply capacity is 200,000 cubic meters per day, the actual demand is about 100,000 cubic meters per day, with a surplus of 100,000 cubic meters per day. In addition, Yangquan has built a sewage treatment plant with a capacity of 140,000 tons/day. Hutuo River and Longhua River which pass through the northern city are being developed as a second water source. County-level and township-level sewage treatment plants in Pingding, Yu county, Niangziguan town and other places have also been built. The supply of water resources can meet the city’s growing demand for urban construction and industrial projects.
In terms of gas supply, a large-scale coal project with mine gas as the main gas source has been completed. 559,000 people have begun to use coal gas, with a usage rate of 98.05%. In terms of heat supply, Hepo Power Plant, Yangguang Power Plant and No 3 Coal Mine Thermal Power Plant have been used as heat sources to complete the combined heating and power project, with a central heating rate of 96.2%. Besides abundant coal resources, Shijiazhuang-Taiyuan refined oil pipeline, Shaanxi-Beijing two-way natural gas pipeline and Shaanxi-Beijing three-way natural gas pipelines guarantee energy supply.
