A refrigerator sticker in the shape of an eaves tile, which was designed by a pottery studio based in Pingyao county, North China's Shanxi province, won the bronze award at the 2023 China Tourism Commodities Competition held in Yiwu, a port city in East China's Zhejiang province, from March 29 to April 2.
With the theme of "Traditional Crafts and Modern Life", the competition collected the latest modern tourism commodities that were designed by traditional craftsmen throughout the whole country. Each product features innovation in the application of traditional crafts, and the combination of traditional crafts with craft materials and modern presentation.
A total of 3,568 tourism products entered the on-site finals, with 15 winning gold awards, 30 getting silver awards, and 60 given bronze awards.
The bronze winner from Pingyao, the Pingyao Shiliu Pottery Cultural Creative Studio, opened in 2017 on East Street in the Ancient City of Pingyao. In recent years, pottery artist, Zhao Kai, from the studio has combined pottery production with local culture.
Zhao collected over 100 pieces of eaves tiles from different periods and patterns from local traditional residences to make these exquisite eaves tile ornaments and refrigerator stickers, which have since gained popularity.
During the competition, the Shanxi Department of Culture and Tourism exhibited more than 100 handicrafts, embroidery works, fabrics, and intangible cultural heritage items. It also distributed nearly 1,000 copies of the province's tourism publicity materials, attracting more than 100,000 visits to its booth.
