Pingyao county in North China's Shanxi province has been developing an increasingly robust traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) industry in recent years.

Corporate management improves TCM industrial growth

The Pingyao Jinwei TCM Comprehensive Development Professional Cooperative was established in the county in 2007 and carried out pilot TCM planting in the local Liji village.

After more than 10 years of development, the cooperative has formed a full industrial chain integrating planting, processing, e-commerce, warehousing, logistics, and sightseeing, allowing farmers to increase their income from the transfer of land use rights, product sales and labor.

"The most fundamental reason for uniting TCM farmers is that the cooperative can maximize their benefits in the union," said Liu Weixiong, chairman of the cooperative.

Through corporate management, the cooperative increased the incomes of more than 2,500 farming households by over 20 million yuan ($3.14 million), and laid the solid foundation for increasing the scale of TCM planting in the county.

Association connects enterprises and farmers

The Pingyao TCM Planting Association, established in 2015, has facilitated communication between farmers and TCM enterprises by formulating a standardized production system, inviting experts to provide technical guidance to farmers, introducing, improving and promoting high-quality varieties, and expanding the sales channels of TCM farmers.

In the past three years, the association organized 75 training sessions, printed and delivered over 50,000 scientific and technological books and materials, and explored a variety of TCM planting models, benefiting some 3,000 farming households in more than 10 towns and townships in Pingyao.

TCM industry promotes local employment

Leading TCM enterprises in Pingyao formed a community of interests with poor households in the county in 2016, providing free planting raw materials, fertilizers and planting techniques, and signing guaranteed recycling contracts.

The enterprises helped 29 once poor villages in the county plant more than 266 hectares of TCM, with 1,753 people from 875 poor households being lifted out of poverty.

Pingyao has taken a new development path of "cooperatives + enterprises + production bases + farmers + market".

As a result, the county has developed 30 authentic TCM varieties whose planting areas have reached 1,480 ha. The local annual TCM output and output value have reached 2,410 metric tons and 43.19 million yuan, respectively, and 7,250 farming households have received a total of 27 million yuan in additional income.

Next, the county will further promote the local TCM industry as a pillar to advance rural revitalization and the modernization of agriculture and rural areas.
