Rural Pingyao busy with spring farmland irrigation

Yancunbu village in Hongshan town in Pingyao county -- located in North China's Shanxi province -- is currently bustling with hands turned to carrying out spring farmland irrigation, according to local officials.

Hongshan town has flat terrain, fertile land and superior agricultural production conditions. Yancunbao village, meanwhile, one of the 13 local areas where farmlands are irrigated with well water, has undeveloped water conservation and arid land.

In recent years, the town has been adjusting its local agricultural structure and promoting dry land farming by guiding local villagers to grow drought-resistant crops such as cereals, peppers, fruit and corn -- while irrigating various crops at different times, according to farming cycles and the types of crop. 

These efforts have largely alleviated the pressures brought by the lack of water resources and improved local farmers' incomes.

For its part, Hongshan town next plans to continue to explore and develop new models suitable for rural development, promote the multiple planting structure of various cash crops, develop villages with special agricultural features and further expand its agricultural development.
