Polished lacquerware from Pingyao county proved a hit at the 4th Shanxi Cultural Industries Fair staged on Dec 5-10 in Taiyuan city in Shanxi province, according to the organizers.
Flourishing in the time of the Tang Dynasty (618-907), Pingyao polished lacquerware is famous for its locality, uniqueness and originality. It has a simple and elegant appearance, a smooth and lacquer finish and brilliantly painted embellishments.
In 2006, Pingyao's polished lacquerware making technique was included on the national intangible cultural heritage list.
In recent years, craftspeople of Pingyao polished lacquerware in Pingyao county have been further exploring the cultural and artistic value of the product, promoting its technological innovation and the local ware's supply chain, to protect and develop the traditional craft.
