Pingyao marks 22nd anniversary as UNESCO World Heritage Site

Pingyao county held an event on Dec 3 marking the 22nd anniversary of the Ancient City of Pingyao's designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site – as well as the first anniversary of the implementation of the Regulations on the Protection of the Ancient City of Pingyao in Shanxi Province. 

The event recognized 94 people who have made outstanding contributions to the protection of the Ancient City of Pingyao. Local government officials and award-winning representatives delivered speeches at the event.

The Ancient City of Pingyao was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site on Dec 3, 1997. 

Officials said that over the past 22 years, it has made remarkable achievements in cultural heritage protection and development, changing from a backward inland region to a world-famous tourist destination. 

The revised edition of the Regulations on the Protection of the Ancient City of Pingyao in Shanxi Province was approved on Sept 30, 2018 and enacted in Dec 3, 2018.

Officials said the release of the revised edition marked a milestone in the protection, development and management of the Ancient City of Pingyao. 

It promoted standard and legal planning, conservation, as well as management and development of the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
